Dummies Guide To Understanding Soccer Jargon

Soccer has a language all of its own and somebody who is unfamiliar with the language may have trouble following a game. Here are a list of some of the more common terms heard during a game.

Foot Fault
During a throw-in, both feet have to be on the ground and the feet must be behind the line. A foot fault means a throw-in for the other team.

Touch Lines
Boundary lines at the edge of the field where a player can touch the ball with his or her hands.

In Touch
When the ball crosses the touch line, the ball is thrown in and play is temporarily stopped. When a ball can be touched by the player hands for throw in it is “in touch”.

Stoppage Time
Time added to the end of the game to compensate for time lost from injuries, wasted time by players, etc. This is at the referee’s discretion.

Offside
When an attacking player is in the defending team’s half of the field, closer to the goal than a defender while the ball is being passed to the attacking player.

Cross
When the ball is kicked from the edge of the field to mid field, usually near the goal or penalty areas, to friendly players. What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… Serena’s Potty Mouth Sets Record Fines
